Italian Wool
100% Gentile di Puglia

The Gentile di Puglia is one of Italy's oldest native sheep breeds, with roots in the sun-baked plains of the Tavoliere in northern Puglia. Known since Roman times for the fineness of its wool, the breed was cited by Pliny and Columella, and for centuries supplied the textile workshops of Naples and southern Europe.

At its peak in the 1960s  it numbered close to a million animals, but today the breed is rare, with only a few thousand sheep left.

Our Italian wool comes from a project dedicated to changing that. The wool is sourced directly from Puglian farmers raising pure-bred Gentile di Puglia, collected and selected by a family with three generations of knowledge of the breed and the region. It is washed and combed in Biella, then spun in Prato, keeping the full production chain within Italy, traceable from farm to cone.

The wool has a natural springiness and loft that is distinctly its own, producing a medium weight yarn with natural softness, quiet texture and depth.
